Reference News Network, August 8 report. According to AFP, August 7 report, Algeria accuses France of provoking and exacerbating bilateral crisis.

The Algerian government issued a statement on July 7, accusing France of being responsible for the bilateral crisis that erupted a year ago and its continued deterioration. This statement is a response to French President Macron's recent shift in position towards Algeria, advocating a "stronger" stance against Algeria.

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Macron of attributing this unprecedented serious diplomatic friction entirely to Algeria in his letter to the French Prime Minister.

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that the content of the letter "completely exempts all responsibility of France," while Algeria believes "this is completely contrary to the facts."

Relations between Paris and Algiers have reached their lowest point since the summer of 2024 when France recognized Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara.

Key events in this crisis include mutual expulsion of diplomatic officials and staff, as well as a complete freeze on official cooperation.

On June 6, Macron stated in a letter to French Prime Minister François Hollande that France should "remain strong and earn respect."

As one of the measures, Macron requested the government to suspend a 2013 agreement with Algeria that exempted holders of diplomatic or official passports from short-term visas. In response, Algeria announced on July 7 "a complete and thorough cancellation" of the agreement.

In a second statement, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had informed the chargé d'affaires of the French embassy in Algeria that "Algeria has decided to terminate the arrangement of providing free use of its national real estate for the French embassy in Algeria."

According to Hassen Abidi, director of the Center for Arab and Mediterranean World Studies, Macron's letter "marks a collective failure of both countries in dealing with this costly crisis," and the president's decision will "strengthen the option of completely cutting diplomatic relations."
