Former Israeli Official: US Unlikely to Join Israel in Attacking Iran

A former Israeli official said he believed that the main purpose of Israel's attack on Iran was not to disrupt nuclear negotiations scheduled for Sunday in Oman.

Former Israeli diplomat and current media analyst Aaron Pinkhas said, "From Israel's perspective, thwarting the negotiations is a benefit, but this is unrelated to the timing of the attack."

Pinkhas told aljazeera that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "has never stated his strategic political objectives, and I doubt that he has any other purposes for launching this attack aside from weakening Iran's capabilities."

"From Mr. Netanyahu's point of view, an achievable goal is to drag the United States into this conflict."

However, he added that if the United States were to intervene, then Netanyahu would "no longer be an active political participant," as Washington would take command militarily.

"I don't think this will happen, but then again, we're talking about Donald Trump. He says one thing in the morning and another at night."

Iran-backed Iraqi Militants Warn US Against Entering War

The Iran-backed Iraqi militant group Kataib Hezbollah issued a statement saying it was "closely monitoring" military movements of U.S. forces in the region.

Mehr, an Iranian semi-official news agency, quoted the group as saying, "If the United States intervenes in the war, we will not hesitate to strike its interests and bases throughout the region."

The statement also noted that Iran does not need anyone's support and has sufficient capability to counter Israel.
