Axios: The US Wants to Seize an Important Island in Iran

The United States has plans to seize Khark Island, located in the Persian Gulf and belonging to Iran. U.S. officials have discussed the possibility of occupying Khark Island. The island is a major oil export terminal hub for Iran. Approximately 90% of Iran's crude oil exports pass through this island, making it crucially important to Iran's economy.

Khark Island is an island in the northeastern part of the Persian Gulf, belonging to Bushehr Province in Iran, located about 55 kilometers northwest of Bushehr Port. The island has an area of about 49 square kilometers and is a rocky island.

The island is Iran's largest oil export port, handling about 90% of Iran's crude oil exports, and it holds extremely strategic importance. There is one of the world's largest oil ports on the island, capable of accommodating oil tankers of 500,000-ton class, with an oil transfer capacity of 60,000 tons per hour, and a storage capacity of approximately 28 million barrels. Crude oil is transported from the Iranian mainland to the island via underwater pipelines.
