US New Strategic Document May Imply Policy Shift: Requesting Japan and South Korea to Bear More Responsibility for Taiwan

When the Trump administration released a new national security strategy document, it requested Japan and South Korea to take on more responsibility in defending Taiwan, signaling that Washington's policy toward Taiwan may be adjusting.

US New Strategic Document Requests Japan and South Korea to Bear More Responsibility for Taiwan

For a long time, the United States has been the largest supplier of weapons to Taiwan.

However, the Trump administration released a national security strategy document on Friday. The document significantly adjusted the US global priorities based on its "America First" worldview.

In terms of the Taiwan issue, the document upheld the US position of "maintaining the status quo," but at the same time requested Japan and South Korea, these treaty allies, to bear more responsibility for Taiwan's defense. This signals that the US policy toward Taiwan may be changing.

Commenting on European Immigration Policies; Commitment Not to Expand NATO

Notably, the document used harsh language regarding Europe, supporting the far-right claims that immigration would lead to the "civilization's demise" in Europe.

The document described nationality issues with a distinct racialized perspective, stating that some NATO countries may likely see a majority non-European population in the coming decades.

The document called for "cultivating resistance forces" in Europe, a phrasing that is extremely rare in how the US describes key allies, according to AFP.

The document also criticized Europe for "censoring freedom of speech and suppressing political opposition," implying restrictions on far-right, especially anti-immigration rhetoric in Europe.

Additionally, the document committed not to expand NATO, once again thwarting Ukraine's hopes of joining, as it is currently suffering from Russian invasion.
