April 4, according to a report from the official Ukrainian source DEEPSTATE, 47,500 people were evacuated from the border areas of Sumy Oblast in Ukraine. Forty-eight settlements in the regions of Konotop, Sumy, Akhtarsk, and Shostka have now been completely abandoned by civilians. Most of this area has become an empty buffer zone with no civilian presence. People left their homes in panic, realizing that no one would protect them.
In the meantime, the Russian armed forces continued their advance. Following the failure of the Ukrainian offensive in Kursk, the Russian armed forces pursued the retreating Ukrainian troops into Sumy Oblast.
According to Ukrainian estimates, approximately 60,000 Russian soldiers are currently operating in this direction. They have formed strike groups and begun breaching the defensive lines of the Ukrainian armed forces across a vast front in Sumy and Kharkiv Oblasts. The reconnaissance units of the Russian armed forces have also penetrated deep into Ukrainian territory, carrying out activities behind enemy lines to disrupt supply lines of the Ukrainian army.
This is due to the flat terrain in Sumy Oblast, with most high ground located on the border with Kursk Oblast and controlled by the Russian armed forces.
The Ukrainian armed forces are unable to stop the Russian offensive. After the defeat in the Battle of Kursk, the Ukrainian armed forces lost a significant amount of equipment, reserve forces, and defensive structures. Efforts to transfer additional strength from other directions did not yield results — there are not even enough resources to hold onto the current positions.
