Sweden to Pay Migrants 32,000 Euros to Encourage Their Return
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told Euronews in an interview that the country is facing difficulties with immigration issues. The government plans to pay migrants 32,000 euros to fund their return.
Currently, Sweden provides each adult migrant with a subsidy of 900 euros to encourage them to leave, but this plan has not been effective. In 2023, only about 1/70 of the applications were approved. To reverse this situation, the Swedish government proposed increasing the subsidy amount to 32,000 euros, a rise of over 3400%.
Kristersson said that Sweden hopes to emulate Denmark, which has already started paying migrants 22,000 euros to encourage their return. He also mentioned that while this method may not be applicable to most people, Sweden has issues with immigrant integration. If someone has legal residency but cannot integrate into local society and does not identify with Swedish lifestyles, they should at least consider returning to their home country.
The Swedish government plans to implement this subsidy program on January 1, 2026.
