Vance on Tensions Between India and Pakistan: We Will Not Get Involved in a War That Is Fundamentally Unrelated to Us
When asked how worried the Trump administration is about the potential nuclear war between India and Pakistan, Vance said, "Listen, we are always concerned whenever there is a conflict between nuclear-armed countries that could lead to significant conflicts... However, we cannot control these countries. Fundamentally, India has grievances against Pakistan, and Pakistan also responds to India. All we can do is try to encourage these countries to ease tensions slightly. But we will not get involved in a war that is fundamentally unrelated to us and is beyond America's control."
Vance continued, "The U.S. cannot order India to lay down its weapons, nor can it order Pakistan to do so. Therefore, we will continue to handle this matter through diplomatic channels. We hope and expect that this will not escalate into a larger regional war, or, God forbid, a nuclear conflict. Of course, we are concerned about this. But I believe that the responsibility of diplomacy, as well as the people in India and Pakistan who remain calm, is to ensure that this does not escalate into a nuclear war. If a nuclear war were to break out, it would certainly be a disaster. At present, we believe that such a situation will not happen."
