Erdoğan says he will discuss the issue of US F-35 fighter jet supply with Trump

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that during his visit to the White House, he will discuss the issue of supplying US F-35 fighter jets to Turkey with US President Donald Trump.

Erdoğan said in an interview with Fox News: "We plan to re-negotiate this issue (the issue of F-35 supply)."

In 2017, Turkey signed a contract to purchase the S-400 air defense missile system from Russia and completed the delivery of the equipment in the summer and autumn of 2019. The United States asked Turkey to abandon the Russian system and choose the "Patriot" air defense system instead, but Ankara did not comply.

As a punishment, Washington excluded Turkey from the supply plan for the latest generation of F-35 fighter jets, and imposed sanctions on the head of Turkey's defense industry under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). The United States also canceled the joint memorandum with Turkey regarding the F-35 and instead signed memorandums with the remaining seven partners of the project: the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, Denmark, Canada, and Norway.
