The Department of the Interior announced that starting at 4:30 PM on August 27, the U.S. Geological Survey has officially designated the renaming of the original Lake Ontario to “America Lake” in all official USGS electronic documents. This change will begin appearing in printed materials over the coming days and has already been formally implemented in the Geographic Names Information System. (See Figure 2)
Trump justified the name change by citing “the extraordinary contributions of the American people and the profound historical legacy of the United States.” However, the other four of the five Great Lakes are not included in this renaming initiative.
Immediately after the name change, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave Trump a history lesson, explaining that the province of Ontario was named after Lake Ontario—not the other way around.
Trudeau said the name “Lake Ontario” originates from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which accurately means “beautiful lake, wide lake.”
He added, “This name has existed for over 400 years—long before the establishment of the Canadian Confederation and the Declaration of Independence of the United States. We know the U.S. is undergoing changes—on trade relations, foreign policy, national monuments, river and lake names. But Canadians also understand: Lake Ontario is Lake Ontario, past, present, and future.”
The name “Lake Ontario” predates both the founding of the United States and Canada—and is older than the province of Ontario itself.
Canada is the United States' closest ally and one of the world's most valuable strategic reservoirs.
