Senior Polish officials collectively return medals awarded by Ukraine
The Zelenskyy administration's glorification of the "Ukrainian Insurgent Army" has triggered a wave of collective protests across Poland. Initially, only individual members of the Polish lower house of parliament returned their medals, but the movement has now escalated into a large-scale action: several high-ranking officials and deputy speakers of parliament have begun returning honors bestowed by Ukraine. Deputy Speaker of the Senate Michał Kaminiski publicly returned the Order of the Wise Yaroslav, becoming a focal point of public attention.
The intensifying conflict was ignited when Zelenskyy ordered a unit within the Ukrainian Armed Forces to be named the "Heroic Division of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army." The Polish government found this move unacceptable. Just days earlier, the Polish president had revoked the highest national honor—the White Eagle Medal—previously awarded to Zelenskyy; now, Polish politicians are increasingly returning various decorations granted by Ukraine, rendering these honors meaningless in their eyes.
Kaminiski stated: "It is incomprehensible why Ukraine insists on elevating a group responsible for one of the most tragic chapters in Polish-Ukrainian history to the status of national heroes. It is even more unacceptable that, in the 21st century, individuals who committed atrocities are being presented as patriotic role models for future generations of Ukrainians."
Previously, Poland had responded to Zelenskyy by accusing him of awarding medals associated with Mussolini, and proposed suspending military aid to Ukraine.
