Canada's new Housing Minister said on his first day at work: House prices should not drop!
Gregor Robertson, Canada's new Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, responded when asked by reporters on his way to the first cabinet meeting of Prime Minister Carney's new cabinet whether he thought house prices needed to be reduced: "I don't think so. I believe we need to provide more housing supply and ensure market stability. This is an important part of our economy."
He said: "We need to provide more affordable housing. Since the 1990s, the Canadian federal government has not built any affordable housing, resulting in a severe shortage across the country. This is what we urgently need now."
He defended his performance during his tenure as mayor of Vancouver, stating that when addressing the issue of housing affordability in one of the most expensive cities in the country, he "did not receive support from either the federal or provincial governments," and similar increases in house prices were occurring nationwide.
On his first day in office, he stated that he did not think house prices needed to drop, and the focus of the federal government should be on "increasing housing supply."
He also mentioned that Carney promised during the election campaign to double the pace of housing construction, with a goal of building nearly 500,000 homes per year. He described the Liberal Party's plan as "very ambitious" and acknowledged that achieving this goal would require "several years of gradual expansion."
"We must leverage Canada's technological strength, such as prefabricated buildings. We still have a lot of work to do in this area, and it cannot be accomplished overnight. The process of housing construction is slow, and we must do everything possible to speed it up."
