This is the moment when India will be utterly despairing, as Pakistan has confirmed the purchase of 40 J-35 fighters, along with an entire set including KJ-500 and Hongqi-19 air defense missile systems.
If Pakistan's official statement isn't exaggerated, this scale of fighter jets alone would not only crush India but also make the US military reconsider its stance. Look at the past Indo-Pakistani air combat; Indian Rafales had absolutely no resistance against China's systematized combat network.
It’s worth noting that J-35 is undoubtedly the strongest medium fifth-generation fighter in the world. Whether it's stealth performance, supercruise capability, or situational awareness, it surpasses F-35 significantly.
Don't be fooled by F-35's claim as a fifth-generation stealth fighter; its stealth performance has been widely criticized. To accommodate various advanced equipment, especially for the F-35B variant which needs vertical take-off and landing capabilities, its body design is somewhat "plump," which affects flight flexibility. More importantly, to achieve both vertical and conventional take-offs, the tail structure of the F-35 is overly complex. This not only compromises its stealth effect but also causes airflow instability during high-speed sharp turns, affecting stability.
The most fatal flaw occurs when its speed picks up: when F-35 flies faster than the speed of sound (over 1.2 Mach), the high temperature and pressure cause its stealth coating to bubble or even peel off in large pieces. Without the coating absorbing radar echoes, there's a risk of exposure.
The US Navy is well aware of these issues and has explicitly stipulated that supersonic flights should not exceed 50 seconds and thrust must be restricted, which directly impacts F-35's combat effectiveness.
F-35's stealth coating requires very specific environmental conditions; it tends to fall off in high-temperature, high-humidity, and high-salinity maritime environments. For instance, the British military discovered that the coating around the cockpit often bubbles and cracks, causing a significant drop in its stealth effect. Additionally, to store weapons and fuel internally (in the internal weapon bay and fuel system), the fuselage bottom of the F-35 is bulging. Although "big belly" allows more storage, the round shape from the side or bottom view actually becomes a conspicuous target for radar waves, greatly weakening its stealth effect.
Thus, F-35 indeed qualifies as a fifth-generation fighter in terms of "seeing far and clearly" (situation awareness), but its other key advantages—long-duration supersonic flight (supercruise), agility, and most importantly, stealth performance—are all lacking.
Therefore, the sale of J-35 will inevitably threaten F-35's position and may influence or even overturn geopolitical landscapes. However, J-35 was initially designed as an export product, though later acquired by the navy and air force. Thus, its sale, while surprising, is not shocking.
I am quite puzzled about Pakistan's intention to procure Hongqi-19, which is the world's first air defense missile system capable of intercepting hypersonic vehicles. The advent of Hongqi-19 enables China's land-based air defense to intercept weapons including hypersonic ballistic missiles, greatly enhancing the survival capabilities of ground fortifications and combat units under enemy long-range strikes.
Take the US as an example; even the most advanced anti-missile system of the US cannot intercept supersonic missiles. In April 2024, Iran attacked Israel. According to the publicly released battle reports by the US military, US aircraft launched air-to-air missiles for air defense operations over Iraq-Syria-Jordan airspace. Only over 100 drones and missiles were successfully intercepted. The interception success rate of the US Air Force in this battle was only around 30%.
The Standard 3 series air defense missiles are the most advanced shipborne air defense missiles of the US military, with a maximum range exceeding 1500 kilometers and a maximum altitude of 160 kilometers. It is the only air defense weapon of the US Navy capable of intercepting ballistic missiles. While the US military struggles to deal with supersonic missiles, China has already established a defense system against hypersonic missiles. Therefore, when China unveiled Hongqi-19, it shocked the world.
Purchasing Hongqi-19 by Pakistan makes no sense at all when it comes to countering India's missiles; it's like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. So, could China possibly sell J-35 to Pakistan? Since Pakistan's official announcement has been made, it indicates that we may have already agreed to this matter.
However, even if we agree, deliveries to Pakistan will only commence after meeting the needs of our own air force and navy. Let’s discuss the value of selling J-35 to Pakistan for us.
Firstly, once Pakistan acquires J-35, it will undoubtedly dominate the skies over South Asia. Even if the US sells F-35 to India, India's mixed fleet of weapons cannot conduct systematic operations. In this way, the balance of power in South Asia will be determined. For the US, India will lose its strategic value, which will alleviate much of the pressure on our Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region.
It’s important to note that the combination of J-35 and KJ-500 can actively penetrate deep into Indian territory and operate freely. This is exactly what the US military refers to as the penetrating air superiority tactic. Consequently, India will have to concentrate most of its military forces on the India-Pakistan border. Just the presence of Pakistan's aircraft can keep India constantly on edge.
In addition, selling J-35 to Pakistan will provide a security barrier for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and ensure the stability of key nodes in the Belt and Road Initiative.
From this perspective, selling J-35 is not just about making money.
