According to a report citing a statement from the U.S. Navy by dpa, a fighter jet of the U.S. Navy "disappeared" in the sea after falling off the carrier. The department explained that an F/A-18E "Super Hornet" fighter jet and a tow tractor directly fell into the Red Sea from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier.
The statement said: "The F/A-18E fighter jet was being towed to the hangar, and the crew responsible for this operation lost control of the aircraft. The aircraft and the tow tractor fell into the sea." The statement also noted that no one died in this incident, and only one sailor sustained minor injuries.
The statement also added: "The sailors towing the aircraft took immediate action and moved away from the aircraft before it fell into the sea. An investigation is currently underway."
According to U.S. Navy data, the cost of an F/A-18 fighter jet is approximately $67 million.
It is worth noting that the U.S. Navy deployed forces in the region partly due to threats from the Houthi rebel group in Yemen. The military insisted that despite this incident, the strike group and air wing aboard the USS Harry S. Truman are fully capable of continuing their missions.
