Media: NASA will announce a plan to build a nuclear reactor on the moon

Politico reported, citing documents and officials, that U.S. Transportation Secretary and acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy will announce this week a plan to build a nuclear reactor on the moon.

The report stated: "Duffy will announce this week an accelerated plan to build a nuclear reactor on the moon."

The report said that according to the documents, NASA had discussed plans to build a reactor on the lunar surface, and set a more clear timeline for the plan.

A NASA official told the publication that these actions aim to "win the second space race."

According to the report, Duffy also proposed a draft directive to accelerate the replacement of the International Space Station.

The media pointed out that the directive requires NASA to seek proposals from the industry for starting a 100-kilowatt nuclear reactor by 2030. The directive also mentioned that the country that first deploys a reactor on the moon may "declare a no-fly zone, which would be a significant constraint for the United States." The media added that this is a sign of NASA's anxiety about the plans of Russia and China.

Previously, Dmitry Rogozin, head of Roscosmos, stated that in May 2025, Roscosmos signed a memorandum of understanding with the China National Space Administration on cooperation to build a lunar power station, which will be an important contribution to the International Lunar Research Station project. In addition, Russian scientists will study the atmosphere of Venus to try to reveal whether there has ever been life on the planet.

China plans to achieve a manned moon landing by 2030 to conduct scientific research.
