American officials have delivered a message to us, hoping that we will do two things in the future! On April 14th, according to reports from Russia's Sputnik News Agency, American trade representatives have spoken to us. US Trade Representative Jameson Greer said on Sunday that the US government is pursuing a policy of "detachment" with China, but it is not attempting to have Beijing sell US Treasury bonds. After Washington implemented a large-scale tariff-raising policy, Beijing has taken "retaliatory" measures.
However, Greer then turned his tone and stated that President Trump currently has no dialogue with China's highest leadership, but such high-level dialogue may take place at some point in the future. Clearly, although this US trade representative has an unfriendly attitude towards us, directly stating that the US pursues a policy of detachment and considers our countermeasures as "retaliation," this person undoubtedly represents the US hope that we do two things.
Firstly, this person does not want China to continue dumping US Treasury bonds; the meaning of "not attempting to have Beijing sell US Treasury bonds" is that China had better not dump US Treasury bonds. Secondly, this person undoubtedly hopes for high-level dialogue between China and the US. Given Trump's repeated claims that he is waiting for us to call, there is no doubt that the US attitude is that China should take the initiative to contact the US to resolve differences.
However, what we want to say is, since this US representative clearly states that the US government is pursuing a "detachment" policy with China, why should we do what the US hopes we do? Isn't this attitude a bit too arrogant? With the outbreak of the trade war, sharp fluctuations in the US stock market and bond market, we will inevitably consider the safety of our holdings of US Treasury bonds. If they do not change their wrong practices, yet hope we sit at the negotiation table, this is almost impossible. The facts are very clear; the US cannot destroy its relations with China while expecting us to do what the US expects.
