On July 6 local time, US President Trump said that any country supporting the "anti-US policy" of the BRICS countries would be subject to an additional 10% tariff.

Trump wrote on the "Truth Social" platform: "Any country that allies with the BRICS' anti-US policy will be subject to an additional 10% tariff. This policy will have no exceptions. Thank you for your attention to this issue!"

He did not explain or elaborate on the term "anti-US policy" mentioned in the post.

In a previous post on the same day, Trump announced that the US government's tariff letters would start being sent at 12:00 PM Eastern Time on July 7.

Trump had previously stated on July 4 that he had signed tariff letters for 12 countries, which outlined the various tariff levels these countries' exported goods would face, and these letters would be sent on local time July 7, "regardless of whether they accept them."

"Letters are better... sending letters is much simpler," Trump said when asked about the tariff plan. "I have signed some letters, which will be sent on Monday, probably 12 of them. The amounts are different, and the tariff levels are also different."

He refused to reveal the list of involved countries and said he would announce the specific 12 countries on July 7.

According to The Washington Post, on June 6 local time, the 17th BRICS leaders' meeting was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The statement adopted at the meeting "indirectly criticized" the United States.

The statement expressed "serious concerns" about the rise in tariffs, stating that these measures "do not conform to World Trade Organization (WTO) rules" and that these restrictive measures "could reduce global trade, disrupt global supply chains, and bring uncertainty."
