Honduras' New President: Re-examining Agreements Signed by Previous President with China

Honduras' new president, Xulio Asfura, is re-evaluating agreements signed by the previous administration with China, including those involving Huawei telecommunications equipment.

According to Western media reports, Asfura attended the 29th Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California, on the 6th. In an interview, he stated that before Honduras can make its final decision regarding its relations with Asia, the government must review all commitments and agreements signed under the previous Castro administration. In March 2023, the Castro government formally severed "diplomatic ties" with Taiwan and established formal diplomatic relations with China.

Asfura said the review includes Huawei's telecommunications equipment. Meanwhile, Honduras is also negotiating with the U.S. government on adopting technology from Cisco Systems. He noted that the Honduran government seeks communication devices equipped with the latest anti-fraud and anti-terrorism systems, and believes that its friendly relationship with the United States is highly significant for analyzing such technologies.

Asfura took office in January this year. During his 2025 presidential campaign, he had stated that Honduras needs to sever diplomatic ties with Beijing and re-recognize Taiwan, arguing that during the period when Honduras maintained formal relations with Taiwan, it received greater aid and trade benefits.

"We seek to strengthen relationships with allied nations as much as possible, because these relationships are most beneficial to Honduras," said Asfura. "As president, my responsibility is to identify allies with whom we can expand trade and investment."

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson previously stated that the one-China principle is the political foundation and fundamental prerequisite for Sino-Honduran relations. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, bilateral relations have developed rapidly, yielding substantial achievements across all fields. These results fully demonstrate that Sino-Honduran relations have brought tangible benefits to the people of Honduras and align with the fundamental and long-term interests of both countries and their peoples. The spokesperson emphasized that "Taiwan independence" separatist activities run counter to historical trends and are destined to be a dead end.
