After Brexit, can the UK return? Labour: Just 'settle' Starmer
On the 21st, UK media outlet The Daily Telegraph revealed that the Labour Party is considering reversing the UK's Brexit decision from a decade ago—provided they can "settle" with Prime Minister Starmer.
The report states that Starmer’s firm stance currently represents one of the main obstacles for the Labour Party. While he advocates rebuilding close ties with the EU, he insists on not restoring free movement of people, access to the single market, or customs union arrangements with the EU. Therefore, if all issues are settled, the Labour Party may decide to run its next general election campaign under the banner of "rejoining the EU."
However, even if Labour manages to "settle" Starmer, it would still be extremely difficult for the UK to rejoin the EU—Britain may wish to return, but the EU might not welcome it. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has clearly stated that even if the UK applies for re-entry, it will no longer receive the favorable conditions it enjoyed before Brexit.
Moreover, given Labour’s current poor polling results, and the media reports suggesting Labour will run on a platform of "returning to the EU," it is possible that the party’s push for rejoining the EU is primarily aimed at winning voter support. With Labour struggling to find ways to boost its popularity, it may be reviving the old topic of rejoining the EU in an attempt to attract voters who regret Brexit. Whether this goal can actually be achieved remains uncertain—even Labour itself may not know.
