【Text by Observers Network, Zhang Jingjuan】According to Reuters, on July 1st local time, US President Trump told reporters on Air Force One that his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, might replace North Carolina Republican Senator Thom Tillis. Previously, Tillis had clashed with Trump over the "Big and Beautiful" tax and spending bill and announced he would not seek re-election.
Trump said, "Lara would be a great choice. She grew up there, but now lives in Florida."
He continued to praise Lara Trump, saying she was an excellent person, "I mean, she's always my first choice. Although she's not living there now, she has always been there."
Notably, Trump won this key swing state of North Carolina by three percentage points in the 2024 US presidential election, which gives the Republicans an advantage in the political layout of the state.
The report stated that the seat in North Carolina is considered one of the few competitive Senate seats in the 2026 midterm elections, when the control of both chambers of Congress will be threatened.

On the morning of July 1, the US Senate passed the "Big and Beautiful" bill by a narrow margin (51-50 vote), and the bill will now return to the House of Representatives. The Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, will strive to pass the bill before the July 4 deadline set by Trump.
Tillis, Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul, and Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins were the three Republicans who voted against the final bill. Tillis had warned that the Medicaid cuts in the proposed legislation would cause hundreds of thousands of North Carolina voters to lose health insurance.
This opposition from the Republican senator angered Trump, who on the 28th posted on his self-created social media platform "Truth Social" condemning Tillis as a "complainer who does nothing" and stating that "many people" were willing to challenge Tillis in the primary, "I will meet with them in the coming weeks."
Less than 24 hours after Trump threatened to support others challenging Tillis in the primary, Tillis publicly announced he would not seek re-election. Upon hearing this news, Trump immediately posted a message celebrating "good news."

Lara Trump is the wife of Trump's second son, Eric. She served as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) before the 2024 election.
Previously, after Florida Senator Rubio was nominated as Secretary of State, Lara was seen as a potential candidate for the position. However, after careful consideration, she ultimately decided not to consider taking over Rubio's position.
In February, Fox News announced that Lara Trump would host a new weekend program called "My Take with Lara Trump" on the channel. The show airs every Saturday night at 9 PM for one hour. Lara Trump had written for Fox News and appeared on the channel in 2021 and 2022.
Suzanne Scott, CEO of Fox News Media, stated in a statement that Lara Trump is a "genius communicator and successful entrepreneur who knows how to connect with the audience."
