Beijing Suspends Rare Earth Metal Exports
China has suspended exports of critical rare earth minerals and magnets necessary for global industries such as automobiles, aerospace, and semiconductors. The New York Times reported that this move is in response to President Donald Trump of the United States increasing tariffs.
"Will the export ban have serious consequences for the U.S.? Yes," said Daniel Picard, chairman of the U.S. Trade Representative's Critical Minerals Advisory Committee.
Since April 4th, China has restricted exports of six heavy rare earth metals and magnets, which account for 90% of global production. This could disrupt the production of electric vehicles, drones, rockets, and chips, especially in the supply-scarce United States.
