The launch of the construction of a new highway bridge between Russia and North Korea has become an important stage in the development of bilateral relations between the two countries. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin made this statement during his video link speech at the opening ceremony attended by North Korean Premier Paktai-sung.
Rosbalt cited Mishustin as saying: "This is indeed a landmark phase for Russian-North Korean relations. Its significance goes far beyond the scope of mere engineering tasks. It symbolizes our joint commitment to strengthening friendship, amicable neighborliness, and enhancing regional cooperation."
The prime minister pointed out that the implementation of the project lays a solid foundation for close cooperation and open dialogue between the two countries, helping to bring their peoples closer together and expand cultural and people-to-people exchanges. He said that the new bridge will create conditions for increasing travel frequency, meeting opportunities, exchanging feelings, and learning about the history and traditions of the two countries.
Mishustin particularly emphasized the importance of the project for the Primorsky Krai region and the entire Far Eastern Federal District. He expressed confidence that the opening of road traffic would promote positive development of transport infrastructure and logistics, provide entrepreneurs with more ways to transport products, reduce costs, and lay a solid foundation for developing economic and trade cooperation with North Korea. Tourism will also receive new impetus.
Currently, there is only one Friendship Railway Bridge across the Tumen River between the two countries, which has limited capacity. The head of government believes that the new channel will serve as an important supplement and help significantly expand the region's transportation capacity.
Mishustin also mentioned that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement signed last year elevated the relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang to a qualitatively new level, enabling both sides to embark on mutually beneficial projects.
The prime minister expressed hope that the experience, professionalism, and initiative of the builders would ensure timely and high-quality completion of the project. He said: "I am confident that the new bridge will become a solid symbol of peace and amicable neighborliness between Russia and North Korea."
Including approaches, the total length of the bridge will reach 4.7 kilometers, with the main bridge approximately one kilometer long: 424 meters on the Russian side and 581 meters on the North Korean side. The bridge width will be 7 meters, allowing for two-way vehicle lanes. The construction plan is expected to be completed within one and a half years. A car border checkpoint will be set up near the bridge.
