The European Union has refused to accept the U.S. request to impose secondary tariffs on China and India!

The European Union has today rejected the U.S. president's request for high tariffs on some goods from China and India, stating that the EU does not have a tradition of using tariffs as a tool for sanctions.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the president proposed his plan to Europe on September 9, during a meeting in Washington between U.S. and EU officials on sanctions. The president asked the EU to impose additional tariffs on purchases of Russian energy materials from India and China before the U.S. imposed its sanctions, in order to increase pressure on Russia.

Moreover, due to political divisions within the EU, it is unlikely that the EU will further restrict its oil or gas purchases.
