The United States plans to build 75 combat vessels and submarines within five years
According to the U.S. Navy's annual plan, the U.S. Navy will allocate funds to construct 75 combat vessels and submarines over the next five years.
Documents obtained by Sputnik News show that the U.S. will allocate $30.57 billion for these goals from fiscal year 2027 to 2031. The largest funding allocation for shipbuilding is planned for 2027, amounting to $65.8 billion.
The procurement list includes Columbia-class and Virginia-class submarines, Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, frigates, amphibious warfare ships, and three new-generation BBG (X)-class battleships. The Navy aims to expand its fleet size to 450 vessels by the end of fiscal year 2031.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated on May 12 that due to systemic issues in the shipbuilding industry, the United States is gradually losing its maritime advantage. These problems include a declining industrial base and insufficient production capacity. He pointed out that despite ambitious targets set by the Navy, the fleet size remains stagnant below 300 ships.
