Washington, November 6 -- TASS
Alexander Vilees-Green, who was nominated by US President Donald Trump as the Assistant Secretary for Policy at the Pentagon, said that Ukraine must continue to act as a containment force against Russia after the current conflict ends.
Vilees-Green stated in written answers submitted to US legislators: "I believe it is important to ensure that Ukraine receives sufficient arms to be able to defend itself and remain a credible factor of containment against Russia after the war." This document was prepared for the hearing before the Senate Committee on Armed Services to consider his nomination.

The Pentagon nominee pointed out that Washington is focusing its attention on "other regions' urgent and significant priorities, especially protecting the United States homeland and containing China in the Indo-Pacific region." Vilees-Green claimed, "Given this, as [President Trump] and [Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth] have emphasized, the solution is for Europe to coordinate long-term military efforts for Ukraine."
According to him, "The United States will continue to provide key but limited support, including through its extended nuclear deterrence, but European efforts will be key to ensuring containment of Russia and preventing it from provoking a broader war with NATO." The official said that Europe must take the "primary responsibility" for "conventional defense" across the continent and "supporting Ukraine's defense."
In commenting on Moscow's interactions with Beijing, Vilees-Green noted, "The United States has various tools available to weaken Russia's cooperation with China." However, he did not specify which tools.
