South Korean media: Chinese companies rank first in the influence of electric vehicle and battery patents! On May 9, South Korean media "Business Post" published an article stating that Chinese electric vehicles and battery patents have surpassed those of South Korea, the United States, and Japan in terms of influence. It was also predicted that Chinese companies might charge fees through patent licensing without exporting cars or batteries to the United States, as a response to Trump's tariff policies. Recently, the report released by Japanese think tank Mitsui & Co. Strategic Research Institute (MGSSI) stated that "Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has surpassed LG Energy Solution and ranked first in terms of patent influence." MGSSI evaluated the technical influence of 20 companies based on the number of citations and validity period of electric vehicle-related patents, and converted it into scores. CATL and LG Energy Solution ranked first and second with scores of 2.7 and 2.6 respectively. Subsequently, Huawei, BYD, and other Chinese enterprises occupied third to fifth places. Hyundai Motor ranked eighth with a score of 1.6. MGSSI believed that "the level of patents for Chinese electric vehicles and batteries has already surpassed those of companies from the United States and Japan." In addition, MGSSI also assessed that even with relatively fewer patent numbers, Chinese enterprises such as CATL and BYD still possess significant influence. In terms of patent numbers, Toyota ranked first with 6,135 patents. Hyundai Motor and BYD ranked third and tenth with 2,250 and 828 patents respectively. The head of MGSSI's Intellectual Property Department said, "Chinese electric vehicle and battery companies do not have many patents, but they carefully select which patents to apply for." It was also predicted that Chinese electric vehicle and battery manufacturers could reduce the impact of U.S. tariffs by owning high-influence patents. This is because they can minimize the impact of tariff barriers by not setting up manufacturing plants in the United States and only licensing intellectual property to overseas companies and charging patent usage fees.
