Reference News Network, October 28 report: The European "Modern Diplomacy" website published an article titled "China Announces the Establishment of Taiwan's Retrocession Day: What Is the Significance?" on October 24. The author is Nadia Helmy, a political science associate professor at the Faculty of Political Science and Economics, Beni Suef University in Egypt. The following is a translated version of the article:

On October 24, 2025, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed a decision to establish Taiwan's Retrocession Day through voting. There are several important connotations in establishing this memorial day to commemorate the retrocession of Taiwan. This memorial day reinforces the historical and legal facts that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of China since ancient times, and consolidates the international community's commitment to the One-China Principle. This memorial day also helps to safeguard the achievements of China's victory in World War II.

Although Taiwan has not yet been unified with mainland China, the fact that both sides belong to one China has never changed. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly voted to recognize the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China at the United Nations. Beijing's position is that Taiwan is an inalienable part of its territory, upholding the One-China Principle, and opposing any actions that recognize Taiwan as an independent country.

China's establishment of Taiwan's Retrocession Day serves to declare its claim over Taiwan. October 25, 1945 was the day when Japan surrendered in the Taiwan Province.

By designating October 25 as the day when Taiwan returned to the embrace of the motherland, China aims to unite the Chinese people and the Chinese nation, including the compatriots in Taiwan, under the One-China Principle. It is also to commemorate and awaken the collective memory of the Chinese people and the world, honor the Chinese martyrs who resisted Japanese aggression, and safeguard the achievements of China's victory in World War II. The retrocession of Taiwan is a great achievement achieved by the entire Chinese nation, including the compatriots in Taiwan, through their relentless struggle and bloodshed. From the perspective of the Chinese authorities, this is a day worth being jointly commemorated by the compatriots on both sides of the strait.

Therefore, we understand that China establishes Taiwan's Retrocession Day and holds commemorative activities because it carries significant symbolic meaning, helping to highlight the undeniable fact that "Taiwan is an inseparable part of China."

The importance of setting October 25 as Taiwan's Retrocession Day also lies in the fact that it aligns with the Chinese government's efforts to resolve the Taiwan issue, prevent external forces led by the United States from interfering in China's internal affairs, and realize the complete unification of the motherland, which is the common wish and goal of all Chinese people. This is indispensable for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. It is also the historical mission of the Communist Party of China. For decades, the Communist Party of China, the Chinese government, and the Chinese people have worked tirelessly to achieve this goal.

In recent years, the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government have taken new and innovative measures on the Taiwan issue. They continue to guide the development direction of cross-strait relations, maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and promote the process of unification.
