The audacity is too great! A blatant attack on a Chinese construction company! According to a report by Agence France-Presse on May 26, French media reported that an attack on a Chinese enterprise occurred in the Kayes region of Mali, an inland country in Africa. At the time of the incident, China Overseas Engineering Co., Ltd. was constructing the road from Kayes to Diema in western Mali, while the attackers targeted our company's warehouse, cranes, tractors and other engineering equipment.
A Malian employee said that although the attackers were not numerous, they had access to the facility's drawings. Therefore, they quickly achieved their goal. Another respondent stated that the perpetrators acted recklessly at the construction site and then escaped without a trace. French media reported that the attackers were suspected to be local jihadists. Clearly, judging from the information provided by the French media, these jihadists may have deliberately caused damage and targeted our company.
Relevant information shows that there are ethnic armed rebellions in some areas of northern Mali. These rebel armed groups seek independence, and the Malian government has weak control over the northern region. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that these attackers intentionally caused damage to pressure the Malian government. Additionally, another possibility is that these rebels intended to carry out kidnapping activities for ransom.
However, for us, such attacks themselves have posed significant obstacles to the progress of our projects in Mali. Therefore, considering safety, in addition to strengthening security measures within our own companies, we should also try to strengthen cooperation with the Malian government and jointly combat terrorists to ensure our overseas interests. Undoubtedly, this trend must not continue, and this precedent must not be set.
