According to a report by the Anadolu News Agency of Turkey on the 22nd, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that he believed his visa had been revoked by the United States.
"I can't go there anymore (the United States), because I think they have already revoked my visa," Petro said at a cabinet meeting on Monday.
He then said: "Actually, I don't need an American visa, but it doesn't matter. I've seen Donald Duck many times, now it's time to see something else." By Donald Duck, he referred to former President Donald Trump.
The relations between the two countries have become tense due to immigration and diplomatic issues. The Trump administration had warned that if the Colombian government refused to accept deported citizens, visa sanctions would be imposed on senior Colombian officials.
Even though both sides later suspended relevant measures through diplomatic consultations, Petro implied that he himself might have become a target of the sanctions.
Petro also mentioned that this prevented him from attending the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Spring Meetings currently being held in Washington. Instead, the Colombian Minister of Finance, Germán Ávila, attended on his behalf.
Petro's most recent visit to the U.S. was in September 2024, when he went to Chicago for a climate conference and also attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
