Australian business leaders are driving the adoption of artificial intelligence to boost productivity.

The Australian Financial Review's front-page report states that the CEO of Westpac, Australia's Westpac Bank, said technological advancement helps control spending. He emphasized: "Pursuing AI to enhance productivity."

Westpac's CEO Anthony Miller said artificial intelligence could be a catalyst for a significant leap in productivity. Even as public anxiety and distrust toward this emerging technology continue to grow, governments should focus on its economic benefits.

Miller stated that technology is "one of the classic ways to improve productivity." With the federal budget due in May, he urged Finance Minister Jim Chalmers to seize the "opportunities and positive impacts" brought by AI—such as improving government services without increasing expenditure—which would outweigh risks like unemployment.

In an interview with The Australian Financial Review, he said: "We have such a tool… which is artificial intelligence, and it could be the cornerstone truly driving a substantial increase in national productivity." "We shouldn't dwell on its potential negative impacts or effects on certain jobs; instead, we should focus on the fact that it can make more jobs more efficient and effective—that’s what we should strive for." Prior to these remarks from the chief executive of one of Australia’s four major banks, Westpac’s CEO Anthony Miller, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank, Matt Comyn, also expressed similar views.

Last week, Comyn told The Financial Review that he supports bold tax reforms, with all options—including adjustments to gas taxes and negative gearing policies—under consideration.

However, a survey revealed that as many as 73% of Australians view artificial intelligence negatively regarding Australia’s job market, 19% hold neutral views, and only 7% express positive opinions.

Overall, Australians remain highly concerned about how artificial intelligence might affect the job market.
