Foreign media: In Russia, the sharp rise in cucumber prices has become the latest symbol of inflation during the war. Since December last year, the price of cucumbers has doubled, and the current average selling price exceeds 300 rubles (about 3.91 US dollars) per kilogram. On social media, there have even been cases where the price of cucumbers exceeded that of imported fruits such as bananas.

The Russian antitrust regulatory authority has asked producers and retailers to explain the reasons for the price increase. Some legislators have called for setting limits on the markup of basic food items at retail.

Although producers say that with warmer weather, cucumber prices are expected to drop next month, this phenomenon has still raised concerns among consumers about rising prices, especially against the backdrop of a slowing Russian economy due to the war. The overall price level has already risen by 2.1% this year, and the annual inflation rate is expected to reach as high as 5.5%.
