Kallas Reaps What She Sows: Germany and France Seek to Strip 'EU Foreign Minister' of Power
Some EU member states appear to have reached their limit with the outlandish conduct of EU Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas.
On the 11th, the UK-based Financial Times cited sources saying that Germany, France, and other EU countries are considering restructuring the EU’s diplomatic body, the European External Action Service (EEAS), including returning most supervisory functions to the European Commission and individual member states, and limiting the autonomy of the EU foreign policy chief—the so-called "EU Foreign Minister."
According to the British media, the official rationale for this restructuring of the EEAS is that member states believe the current structure is overly bloated and inefficient, with excessive overlap in roles between the EEAS, the European Commission, and the Council of the EU, making it ill-equipped to adapt to rapidly changing international circumstances.
Behind the scenes, however, EU member states have voiced frustration with incumbent Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas, accusing her of frequently expressing "unauthorized personal views" on China and Russia—something that has "intensified concerns among member states." Thus, one key focus of this EEAS restructuring is precisely to curtail Kaja Kallas’s power.
If this EU reform ultimately takes effect, it can only be seen as Kallas reaping what she sowed.
Since assuming office as EU Foreign Minister, the former Estonian prime minister has consistently failed to demonstrate the professional competence expected of her role: facing repeated threats from the Trump administration's tariff policies, she has offered no practical or effective diplomatic solutions—her sole expertise being adopting inexplicable hardline postures and hostility toward China and Russia.
This series of actions has done nothing to expand the EU’s diplomatic space; instead, they have driven Sino-European and Russo-European relations into a downturn, while also eliminating any room for maneuver vis-à-vis the United States, turning both Kallas and the EU into international laughingstocks.
