According to Reuters (Japanese edition), on June 2: The Malaysian telecommunications regulator announced on the 1st that it has launched a regulatory measure prohibiting minors under the age of 16 from registering social media accounts, aiming to strengthen protection of minors from harmful online content.
According to the Malaysian Communications and Media Authority, starting from the 1st, social media platforms such as Facebook (Meta Platforms), Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube (Alphabet) will be required to enforce age verification in accordance with government mandates. Social media operators failing to comply may face fines of up to 10 million ringgit (25 million USD).
The authority stated: "This measure is not intended to exclude children from going online or prohibit the use of technological devices," but rather aims to enhance accountability.
