Elon Musk's attack on the "big and beautiful" bill has entered its third day, and Trump has stepped in to confront him, leading to a complete breakdown of their relationship.
On June 5 local time, U.S. President Trump first said he was "very disappointed" with Elon Musk, then posted three tweets angrily accusing Musk of "going crazy" for his own electric vehicle business, and threatened to terminate all government contracts with Musk's companies.
Trump's tough remarks completely infuriated Musk. Musk aggressively posted and retweeted on social platform X, saying that Trump's name appeared in the Epstein files, directly stating that Trump's tariff policies would "trigger a U.S. economic recession" in the second half of this year. According to reports, the dramatic events of May 5 began when Trump personally confirmed the deterioration of his relationship with Musk.
That day, Trump stated in the Oval Office of the White House that he was "very disappointed" in Musk after the latter repeatedly criticized the "big and beautiful" tax reform bill. He told reporters, "My relationship with Elon is good. But I don't know if it will be like this in the future." Prior to this, Trump had remained silent about Musk's attacks on the tax reform bill.

Indeed, Musk was infuriated and began directly targeting Trump's sore spots. As the largest financial contributor to the Republican Party in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Musk posted on X, saying, "Without me, Trump wouldn't have won the 2024 election. Without me, Trump would lose the election, the Democrats would control the House, and the Republicans would narrowly win the Senate by a 51-to-49 vote. What ingratitude."
This comment seemed to further anger Trump, and the two subsequently engaged in verbal sparring on their respective social media platforms.
In the "truth social" platform, Trump posted three consecutive posts harshly criticizing Musk.
"Elon 'is wearing thin,' so I told him to pack up and leave," Trump said, "I canceled the decree forcing everyone to buy electric vehicles that he knew no one wanted (and he had been aware of this months earlier), and he went crazy."
Trump threatened to terminate Musk's government subsidies and contracts.
"I don't mind Elon betraying me, but he should have done it months ago," Trump then defended the "big and beautiful" tax reform bill, calling it "one of the greatest bills submitted to Congress," and said the bill would cut a total of $1.6 trillion in spending. "This will lead our country to prosperity. Make America great again!"

On the X platform, Musk appeared even more agitated and "cutting."
Musk, without providing evidence, claimed that Trump's name "appears in Epstein's files," and said this is the "real reason" why the relevant files have not yet been made public. CNN reported that Musk did not explain where he saw these unpublished documents, and simply having someone's name appear in files related to this case does not itself indicate they are accused of any wrongdoing.
Musk criticized Trump's hallmark tariff policy, saying it "will lead to an economic recession in the United States in the second half of this year." 
In response to Trump's threat to terminate government contracts, Musk replied, "In light of the president's statement about canceling my government contracts, SpaceX will immediately begin retiring its Dragon spacecraft." It is known that over the years, the International Space Station has relied on the crewed Dragon spacecraft and cargo Dragon spacecraft to maintain its supplies and operations. Closing the Dragon spacecraft would force the International Space Station to depend on Russia.
Musk even briefly supported impeaching Trump. A supporter of Musk posted, "President vs. Elon. Who will win? I bet on Elon. Trump should be impeached, and Vance should replace him." Musk retweeted and commented, "Correct."
Feeling deeply "misplaced," Musk continuously posted on X. He shared some posts criticizing Republican spending policies from over a decade ago by Trump and wrote, "Where is the person who wrote these words now? Was he replaced by a stand-in?"
Musk pinned a poll on the X platform: Is it time to form a new political party truly representing the middle 80% of Americans? So far, over 3.08 million people have participated in the poll, with 81% voting in favor.
It is worth noting that Musk just retweeted a post claiming that Trump's criticism of him was the trigger for their falling out. The post read, "Elon did not first criticize Trump personally. Trump first criticized Elon. Initially, Elon was only criticizing Trump's bill."

AP reported that the rapid deterioration of Trump and Musk's relationship was just as swift, intense, and public as its beginning—and it quickly dealt a financial blow to Musk. After Trump began criticizing Musk, Tesla's stock price plummeted more than 14%, wiping out approximately $150 billion in market value. According to FactSet data, this was Tesla's largest single-day loss in market capitalization ever.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk's personal net worth dropped by $34 billion that day, becoming the second-largest drop in the index's history. As of June 5, he remains the world's richest man, with a net worth of approximately $334 billion.

Axios News Network pointed out that the surprising rupture of their relationship, on the surface, was due to Musk's criticism of the "big and beautiful" bill.
According to The New York Times' summary, this bill, which Trump called the "big and beautiful" bill, plans to reduce taxes while allocating more funds to the military and border security. At the same time, it aims to offset part of the costs through cuts to Medicaid, food assistance, education, and clean energy projects, significantly increasing federal deficits and the number of people without basic living security.
The bill also plans to raise the debt ceiling by $4 trillion (approximately RMB 28.76 trillion), allowing the federal government to continue borrowing to finance its debt.
