Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan will testify before Congress on July 14, marking the first time since 2019 that Supreme Court justices have appeared at a congressional appropriations hearing to request an annual budget. According to the schedule released by House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole, the two justices will appear before the House Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government. A source familiar with the matter said they will also testify before members of the Senate Appropriations Committee on the same day. The Supreme Court is requesting over $14 million in additional funding for the 2027 fiscal year to enhance security for its nine justices. House appropriators have advanced a bill that would provide $207 million to the Supreme Court—nearly $44 million more than the current enacted appropriation level. Lawmakers from both parties and both chambers hope to gain further insight into how the court intends to use this funding.
