Bering Strait Tunnel Designer: Undersea Tunnel Construction May Take 15 Years, Russia-US Bering Strait Tunnel Cost Could Be 7-15 Billion Dollars
Viktor Razbegin, the designer of the Bering Strait undersea tunnel and a scientist, stated in an interview with Sputnik News that the construction period of the tunnel between Chukchi Peninsula and Alaska depends on the integration of funds and labor resources.
Razbegin pointed out, "According to domestic and foreign experience, 7-8 years is the most optimistic estimate, while 10-12 years is more realistic."
He previously said that since the 1990s, various possible technical schemes for building the tunnel have been studied. Currently, the most promising tunnel design includes two transport tunnels and one supporting maintenance tunnel, with connecting passages for maintenance.
According to the scientist, due to the presence of two islands in the strait, the potential tunnel will consist of three parts: a small tunnel connecting the two islands, 4.5 kilometers long; and two longer tunnels, each as long as the Channel Tunnel. The total length of the tunnel could reach 98 to 112 kilometers.
Sputnik News, Moscow, November 4th - Viktor Razbegin, the designer of the Bering Strait undersea tunnel project and a scientist, stated in an interview with Sputnik News that the cost of the tunnel connecting Chukchi and Alaska would be between 7-8 billion dollars and 12-15 billion dollars.
Razbegin said, "The estimated cost of the tunnel ranges from 7-8 billion dollars to 12-15 billion dollars. One of the reasons for the fluctuation in the cost is the different workload included by different researchers: some include only tunnel excavation works, while others cover all infrastructure construction."
When asked about the tunnel construction schedule, Razbegin said:
"7-8 years to 10-15 years. It depends on whether we can concentrate funds, construction capabilities, and labor resources. 7-8 years is the most optimistic, and based on domestic and foreign experience, 10-12 years is more realistic."
According to the scholar, due to the presence of two islands in the strait, the potential tunnel will consist of three parts: a small tunnel between the islands, 4.5 kilometers long, and two larger tunnels, each as long as the European tunnel. The total length of the tunnel could reach 98 to 112 kilometers.
Earlier, Kirill Dmitriev, president of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and special representative of the President of Russia for cooperation with foreign investments, stated that the future plan is to use the advanced technology of the American "Boring Company" to build an intercontinental tunnel connecting the Russian Chukchi Peninsula and the US Alaska through the Bering Strait.
On October 23, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that the project of building a Russian-American tunnel through the Bering Strait cannot be realized under conditions of lack of political will and existing restrictions on Russia.
