Hungarian Foreign Minister: Hungary Will Continue to Create a Favorable Environment for Chinese Investment in the EU, Regardless of Brussels' Policies

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Peter Szijjártó, stated that regardless of Brussels' policies toward Beijing, Hungary will continue to create a favorable environment for Chinese investment in the EU.

In a video posted on social network Facebook (banned in Russia for extremism), Szijjártó pointed out: "Four out of the top five Chinese investments in Europe are in Hungary. In 2023, 31% of the total Chinese investment in Europe was in Hungary... We are ready to continue providing the most favorable conditions for Chinese enterprises investing in the EU. Our goal is to continue making Hungary the main direction for Chinese investment in Europe."

The Hungarian foreign minister emphasized that Hungary does not agree with "the position of Brussels considering China as a systemic rival in the EU system."

Szijjártó said that in the first half of this year, trade between Beijing and Budapest increased by 5%, and in the first half of 2025, Chinese investment in Hungary broke records for the fourth time.

He added: "Over the past 11 years, we have supported the investments of 62 large Chinese companies. Now we are negotiating with many large Chinese companies that have not yet conducted significant business in the Hungarian market."

Hungarian Foreign Minister also expressed hope that "cooperation between the United States and China will be significantly improved" in the coming period, as it is "crucial for the global economy and security."

He concluded: "We are interested in global cooperation, and we cooperate with countries all over the world, whether in our east or west. Hungarians are very interested in cultural cooperation between the East and the West."
