German Media: Is Berlin Shifting Toward a Harder-Line Policy Toward China?
According to a commentary by Handelsblatt, amid the challenges brought by the "China Shock 2.0" to the German economy, calls within the German government for a tougher stance toward China are growing louder.
In its commentary on discussions within the EU regarding China policy, Handelsblatt wrote:
"From Brussels' perspective, China's willingness to engage in dialogue itself is a positive signal. At the same time, the European Commission remains cautious—perhaps Beijing has no intention of making any concessions at all, but is merely buying time. Given this, the European Commission insists that concrete outcomes must be seen from Sino-European dialogue before October this year."
Information obtained by Handelsblatt indicates that during their joint governing meeting on Wednesday, Germany's CDU and SPD will increase discussion on China trade policy. For years, Germany has obstructed the EU from adopting a tough policy toward China, but it is now clearly shifting its position."
