Israel: Suspect Linked to Iranian Agents Arrested in Cyprus
Cypriot police said a man suspected of "espionage" and "terrorism" was arrested on Saturday in Cyprus, with media reports saying the person had ties to Iran. Police declined to provide details about the suspect citing "national security."
"Following today's coordinated operation, a person suspected of involvement in terrorism-related crimes has been arrested," police said on Saturday. The suspect appeared before a closed court in Limassol and was remanded for eight days on charges related to "terrorism and espionage."
Cypriot media reported that the man, who is said to be from Azerbaijan, was found due to suspicious behavior near a British airbase in Akrotiri, south of Limassol, which is the second-largest city in Cyprus.
According to online media Philenews, the man is believed to have ties with "Iranian agents" and arrived in Cyprus last month posing as a British tourist. The same source claimed that a foreign intelligence agency facilitated his arrest.
Cypriot media reported that high-definition cameras, telephoto lenses, notebooks, computers, and three mobile phones were found in the suspect's apartment. It was also reported that two other suspects allegedly linked to the case were arrested in the UK.
Since hostilities broke out between Israel and Iran, Cyprus, located in the eastern Mediterranean, has become a transit point for third-country nationals fleeing the region.
The island has also become a stopover for Israelis seeking to return home by air or sea after being stranded abroad.
