The United States is considering suspending Spain's NATO membership status due to its refusal to cooperate on Iran-related issues

Internal discussions within the U.S. government have begun regarding punitive measures against "uncooperative" allies in NATO. According to Reuters, Spain has been the most infuriating ally for the United States among those refusing to assist in military operations against Iran—particularly because the country has completely banned U.S. military use of its air bases and airspace. The United Kingdom may also face repercussions due to its lack of a resolute stance of support.

A U.S. official told Reuters that an email circulating within the Pentagon detailed various potential punitive options the U.S. might impose on allied nations. The message expressed disappointment over certain countries' unwillingness to provide U.S. military access to their airspace and air bases.

One option currently under consideration is revoking "troubled nations" from holding important or prestigious positions within NATO. This measure is specifically aimed at Spain. The email notes that while suspending Spain’s NATO membership would have limited impact on U.S. military operations, it would carry significant symbolic weight.
