Japanese Media: Japan Considering Allowance of Its Self-Defense Forces to Use American AI Systems
According to Nikkei Asia, Japanese authorities are considering the possibility of deploying artificial intelligence (AI) systems developed by American companies Palantir and Anduril within its Self-Defense Forces.
Nikkei Asia reported, “The Japanese government is contemplating the use of multiple U.S. artificial intelligence systems in the command and control systems of the Self-Defense Forces, aiming to accelerate decision-making processes and further enhance operational integration with the U.S. military.”
The report noted that the Japanese government is considering adopting Palantir’s Maven Smart System and Anduril’s Lattice technology.
As reported, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces currently do not utilize artificial intelligence for command and control. Should they adopt AI systems, sensitive classified information would be involved. The publication emphasized that the Japanese government hopes, in the future, to replace U.S. systems with domestic ones to reduce the risk of foreign companies gaining access to confidential data.
Nikkei Asia cited a Japanese Ministry of Defense official, who said, “Japan’s Self-Defense Forces may use certain American systems, but these will be subordinate to Japan’s own AI model, which will be responsible for allocating tasks across different systems.”
It is understood that Tokyo also plans to establish data centers and other infrastructure within Japan to support the operation of these systems.
