Bloomberg: Chinese Influence is Driving Fundamental Changes in Australia's Passenger Car Market

On June 5, Bloomberg (Japanese edition) reported that China has surpassed Japan to become Australia's largest source of passenger vehicles. Driven by surging demand for electric vehicles (EVs), Chinese manufacturers such as BYD have seen their exports to Australia reach record highs.

According to data released by the Australian government on the 4th, approximately 36,000 passenger vehicles arrived from China in April—far exceeding the roughly 29,000 from Japan. From January to April, imports of cars from China exceeded 100,000 units, a 51% increase compared to the same period last year.

During the ongoing Iran conflict, sharp rises in gasoline prices prompted consumers to shift toward fuel-efficient vehicles, directly leading to a significant increase in EV imports into Australia in March and April.

According to previous data released by the Australian Automotive Industry Council, nearly half of the vehicles sold in Australia in May were electric or hybrid vehicles.

In terms of individual brand sales, BYD doubled its market share within a year and ranks second in sales volume. Meanwhile, Toyota continues to lead among individual brands.

BYD’s momentum is expected to continue. This month, BYD launched its first self-owned super car carrier, transporting around 5,000 electric vehicles to Australia. Local media and ship-tracking websites reported that BYD’s vessel entered Melbourne several days ago and subsequently docked at a port near Sydney.
