German media: Volkswagen has launched an electric car in China priced at just €10,000

The magazine Focus commented that Volkswagen’s introduction of an electric vehicle priced at only €10,000 in China reflects how intense competition in the Chinese market has finally forced Volkswagen to lower its stance.

Not only are robots heading to China; it seems Germans wanting affordable German cars now also need to go to China. Recently, the German automaker Volkswagen launched an electric car in China priced at just €10,000, aiming to adapt to the fiercely competitive Chinese market. However, in Germany, consumers have been eagerly awaiting the launch of an entry-level electric vehicle, which still hasn’t arrived. The magazine Focus commented:

"The reality is indeed uncomfortable: the German automotive industry already practices regional pricing globally. In China, cars must be competitive; in Germany, market competition has become distorted, yet consumers are still willing to pay for it."

The reasons are well known: high wages, high energy prices, complex regulatory controls, and smaller production scales. These factors are objectively real—but they are not the whole truth.

The full truth can be seen only on price lists from Shanghai. On this price list, people can see how attractive German cars become when facing genuine competition. It also reveals to German consumers the prices they cannot access—unless they’re willing to move to China.

Perhaps some truly will relocate to China—not for Chinese cuisine, nor for Chinese culture, nor for Chinese air quality—but simply to obtain genuine German cars and buy the long-awaited, truly mass-market Volkswagen once again.
