The EU plans to counter Trump's tariffs, with the first round targeting $28 billion worth of American goods, including iconic American products such as Harley-Davidson motorcycles and bourbon whiskey. This strategy strikes at the core industries in the U.S., particularly agriculture and consumer goods sectors, directly applying economic pressure on farmers and small business owners who are supporters of Trump.
This move means that the EU will join China and Canada in imposing retaliatory tariffs on the U.S., thereby accelerating the escalation of the global trade war.
According to a report by Reuters, starting from Wednesday (April 9), the EU faces a 25% import tariff on steel, aluminum, and automobiles imposed by the U.S., along with a 20% "reciprocal tariff" on nearly all other EU goods.
Trump's tariffs involve approximately 70% of the EU's total exports to the U.S. last year, valued at 53.2 billion euros. The U.S. may also impose tariffs on copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and timber.
This trade war is not only an economic game but also reveals deep fissures in the transatlantic relationship. The EU demonstrates its firm stance on international trade rules through strong countermeasures, while hinting at possible shifts toward Asian markets.
