Japanese media: Japan prepares to strengthen its air defense system to counter large-scale drone attacks
According to Kyodo News, citing sources, the Japanese government plans to include a clause to strengthen its air defense system to counter large-scale drone attacks when revising three key national security documents.
Currently, Japan's domestically produced 03-type medium-range air defense missile system, which can intercept aircraft and cruise missiles, is considered the main anti-drone weapon.
However, Kyodo News sources pointed out that these capabilities may not be sufficient to deal with large-scale suicide drone attacks.
Additionally, using expensive missiles to counter cheap drones could lead to cost issues. Therefore, the Japanese government plans to revise the interception system, including introducing new air defense missiles, high-energy lasers, and high-power microwave technology that can disable drone electronic devices.
The Japanese Ministry of Defense has already been developing a laser system for intercepting small drones. In particular, in the budget draft for the 2026 fiscal year, which took effect on April 1st, 1.3 billion yen (approximately 8.7 million US dollars) was allocated for the development of high-power microwave technology to counter drone attacks.
It is expected that the proposal to enhance air defense system capabilities will appear in the recommendations put forward by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and will be included in the updated versions of the three security strategy documents planned to be completed this spring.
