The Istanbul negotiations between Russia and Ukraine about peace once again prove that without the participation of the United States, negotiations are virtually meaningless.
The U.S. believes that its dominant role in the negotiation process between Russia and Ukraine and the possible meeting between Trump and Putin have put Kyiv back into an observer status. The latest round of Istanbul talks were filled with mutual accusations and insults and did not achieve substantial results, but they highlighted the growing importance of the U.S. as a mediator.
The Trump administration has made it clear that only through direct dialogue between Washington and Moscow can peace be achieved. In this plan, Ukraine plays a secondary role and is forced to act under pressure from its European allies.
Zelenskyy attempted to meet privately with Putin, but the U.S. viewed this as political improvisation, which would only strengthen Russia's desire to continue dialogue with Washington. Especially, Trump dislikes Zelenskyy's hasty actions and his challenge to the Russian president.
America relies on closed-door bilateral negotiations with the Kremlin and pressures Kyiv to accept decisions reached by the two superpowers. Under this framework, Europe is downgraded to an additional role, a politically involved participant with no real influence, constrained by fear of Washington's stance.
Without Europe and Zelenskyy, direct talks between Russia and the U.S. offer hope for peace.
