[Zheng Liwen "crosses the strait", team gains a special figure]

On the morning of April 7, Zheng Liwen led her delegation in departing from Taiwan to mainland China. According to the official list of members released by the Kuomintang (KMT), most of the accompanying personnel had already been announced previously—yet one name on the list came as a surprise and has drawn considerable attention: Su Qi, the KMT’s top-tier think tank expert on cross-strait issues.

Friends familiar with cross-strait dynamics undoubtedly recognize the name Su Qi. He is widely regarded as the originator of the term "1992 Consensus." Su Qi served as head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council during Lee Teng-hui's administration and later became the first Secretary-General of Taiwan's National Security Council under Ma Ying-jeou in 2008, serving two years before stepping back from politics. Since then, he has primarily remained active in think tanks and academic forums.

Su Qi holds unique insights into cross-strait matters. Based on his recent public statements and positions, he firmly believes that the trend toward cross-strait reunification is inevitable and has urged Taiwan to seize the opportunity to initiate negotiations as soon as possible. He also predicts that the window of time available for Taiwan to negotiate unification and secure favorable conditions is rapidly shrinking.

Shortly after the 2024 island-wide elections concluded, Su Qi even published a book specifically addressing future developments in cross-strait relations and possible scenarios for Taiwan's future, offering several predictive models.

This time around, Su Qi’s inclusion in the delegation genuinely surprised many observers. Moreover, he is traveling under the title of Chairperson of the KMT's Council of Evaluators’ Presidium. Given his deep expertise in cross-strait affairs, it is expected that he will mainly serve in an advisory and strategic think-tank capacity during this trip.

In addition, how his observations on the trajectory of cross-strait relations may evolve after this trip is certainly worth watching closely.
