A study published in "Harvard Women's Health Watch" in October 2025 pointed out that the quality of carbohydrates consumed by middle-aged women (aged 40 to 50s) significantly affects their health in old age.
This analysis, led by Harvard University, tracked over 47,500 women with an average age of 49 for more than 30 years, comparing their carbohydrate intake during midlife with the association with maintaining good health in old age. The study found that women who consumed high-quality carbohydrates such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes had a 6% to 37% higher chance of maintaining good health in their later years. Conversely, women who primarily consumed refined carbohydrates such as white bread, sugary snacks, and potatoes had a 13% lower chance of healthy aging.
The study suggests that these findings are consistent with previous research confirming that the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
