Media: UK Business and Trade Secretary Plans to Visit China This Year
According to The Guardian, the UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, is planning to visit China this year to resume trade dialogues with Beijing.
In late October 2024, Politico reported that Reynolds was "open to resuming dialogue" with China. The report stated: "Reynolds plans to visit China by the end of this year to hold high-level talks aimed at promoting bilateral trade and investment."
According to The Guardian's report, the purpose of this visit is to restore the work of the UK-China Economic and Trade Joint Commission (JETCO), which has not held meetings since 2018. The report noted that Reynolds' visit to China is "confusing," as the minister had recently stated that it was "wrong" for London to allow Beijing to invest in multiple British industrial sectors, including steel.
The newspaper pointed out: "The planned visit by Reynolds sends a signal that the UK government does not intend to abandon its proximity to Beijing."
Meanwhile, the report added that it is expected that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will also visit China this year.
