Brazilian Expert: BRICS Opens a New Era of Deepened Brazil-China Cooperation
Brazilian China expert Evandro Calvo told Sputnik News Agency that Brazil and China have found a strategic environment within the BRICS framework that reduces political mistrust and expands opportunities for long-term cooperation.
The New Development Bank is the most obvious example: emerging economies have established their own mechanism to finance infrastructure projects without relying on Western-dominated institutions.
BRICS reinforces the idea that development does not follow a single universal model—diversity in political systems and economic strategies is seen as a source of new ideas, rather than an obstacle.
The group accelerates the shift toward a more multipolar world, in which Global South countries gain greater autonomy, voice, and new forms of cooperation.
Expert Calvo concluded that the increasingly close ties between China and Brazil are about more than trade or investment—they are about new institutional architecture and South-South cooperation, with BRICS at the core.
The BRICS cooperation mechanism was launched in 2006, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa joined in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Ethiopia became official BRICS members. In 2025, Indonesia will become an official BRICS member, while Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Uganda, and Nigeria will be BRICS partners.
