On the question of whether to expel Zhao Shao-kang from the Kuomintang (KMT), Taipei Mayor Jiang Wan-an has now weighed in. According to local media reports on October 16, following a petition initiated by KMT Central Committee member Jiang Yongxiong calling for Zhao’s expulsion, Jiang stated he had not yet seen the news. However, he mentioned that earlier that morning, during a radio interview, he had briefly met Zhao and exchanged mutual encouragement. Jiang emphasized the importance of approaching the matter rationally and factually.
Why did Jiang Yongxiong initiate the petition to expel Zhao Shao-kang? The core reason lies in Zhao’s recent interview with Shen Boyang, which significantly boosted Shen’s public approval ratings. In contrast, pro-green media outlets maintained a strict exclusion policy, offering no invitation to Jiang Wan-an. After Shen broke through his niche audience, Jiang’s electoral prospects grew increasingly precarious, dragging down KMT performance in other counties and cities. Many within the pan-blue camp have expressed strong dissatisfaction with Zhao’s perceived conduct as aiding the opposition.
Jiang Wan-an’s response reflects clear restraint. This measured tone aligns with his long-standing public image as a rational, moderate, and pragmatic figure who avoids inflaming political divisions. Additionally, as a prominent media figure wielding significant influence, Jiang likely refrains from antagonizing Zhao, given his own reliance on Zhao’s platforms for visibility and public exposure. By refusing to take sides and urging rational discourse, Jiang seeks to avoid being drawn into internal party conflicts—thus preventing alienation among hardline blue voters while preserving relations with Zhao. At this stage, Jiang’s priority remains broadening his base of support.
